Berks Model UN Circuit

Education is the best weapon for peace

Country Flags

Our Story:  Model UN is almost as old as the United Nations.  One Berks County school, Wyomissing Area, started to hold its own conference, WAMUNC, in 2003.  The conference typically has over 150 delegates from around the area competing in 4 different committee rooms with success and enjoyment for all!  The Wyomissing Area club holds an annual regional training in October and has won regional and national accolades in conferences held by Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, George Washington, and Rutgers.  Advisors BJ Dramby and Meghan Tierney are now attempting to expand Model UN outside of school with Strive for Fives.  School teams, club teams, and individuals are invited to our quarterly competitions.

Our Offerings:  Quarterly trainings and simulations will allow students in grades 7-12 to learn and practice the skiils associated iwth Model UN.  Each session will start with a training and refresher activities.  We quickly transition to a three-hour simulation where the students debate and solve problems ranging from serious topics like water rights and fun topics like school dress codes.  No prior knowledge is expected.   Training and simulation materials are included in the price.

Participating in Model United Nations (MUN) can provide students with a range of skills and experiences that contribute to their overall personal and academic development. Here are several ways in which Model UN can prepare students for success:

  1. Research Skills: MUN requires students to thoroughly research and understand the topics they will be debating. This helps students develop strong research skills, including the ability to gather information from various sources, analyze data, and synthesize complex information.

  2. Public Speaking and Debate Skills: MUN involves active participation in debates and discussions, requiring students to articulate their thoughts clearly and persuasively. This enhances their public speaking and debate skills, which are valuable in various professional and academic settings.

  3. Critical Thinking: Participants in MUN are often required to think critically about global issues, analyze different perspectives, and propose innovative solutions. This fosters the development of critical thinking skills, which are crucial for problem-solving and decision-making in many areas of life.

  4. Diplomacy and Negotiation: MUN simulations involve diplomacy and negotiation, as students work to build alliances, find common ground, and resolve conflicts. These skills are applicable in a variety of contexts, including business, politics, and international relations.

  5. Cultural Awareness and Global Perspective: MUN exposes students to a diverse range of cultures, perspectives, and global issues. This helps them develop cultural awareness and a broader understanding of the interconnectedness of global challenges, which is increasingly important in our interconnected world.

  6. Leadership Skills: Participants often take on roles such as ambassadors, committee chairs, or rapporteurs, providing opportunities for leadership development. Leading a group, guiding discussions, and facilitating consensus are all valuable leadership skills that students can cultivate through MUN.

  7. Networking and Social Skills: MUN conferences bring together students from various schools and countries. This provides an excellent opportunity for networking and developing social skills, as students interact with their peers, share ideas, and build connections that can be beneficial in their future endeavors.

  8. Time Management: MUN conferences have tight schedules, and participants must manage their time effectively to prepare for debates, attend committee sessions, and meet deadlines. This helps students develop strong time management skills, a crucial asset in academic and professional settings.

  9. Writing Skills: MUN involves the drafting of resolutions, position papers, and other documents. This helps students enhance their writing skills, including the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and concisely.

  10. Confidence Building: Participating in MUN can boost students' confidence as they engage in public speaking, navigate complex issues, and interact with peers in a competitive yet supportive environment.

Overall, the skills and experiences gained through Model United Nations can significantly contribute to students' personal growth and academic success, preparing them for a wide range of future opportunities.
